Looking for a Rarity: Histiocytic Sarcoma  [PDF]
Joana de Castro Rocha, Isabel Paiva, Ana Rita Cruz
Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2016.72009
Abstract: Histiocytic sarcoma is an extremely rare and very aggressive malignancy, with poor prognosis. The cases described in the literature are few and the treatment is not currently considered consensual. The clinical presentation is very variable. Its characterization is made based primarily on the histology. The authors present a case of an 82-year-old woman, with multiple adenopatic retroperitoneal and left iliac conglomerates, with left leg associated edema (extrinsic compression by conglomerates). After intensive study and approach ganglion biopsy, the histologic diagnosis revealed a histiocytic sarcoma.

Advances in Lung Cancer (ALC) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/alc.2015.42004
Abstract: Metastases are synonymous of malignant neoplasm in advanced stage and so associated with a poor prognosis. As the first manifestation of cancer disease, the muscle metastasis is very rare. The definitive diagnosis of its presence is made based on histology. The authors presented the case of a patient with a lung adenocarcinoma, being with first manifestation of it, a muscle metastasis only about a month later there were clinical manifestations with imaging appearance that led to the diagnosis of a primary neoplasm. The rare manifestation of the disease motivated the study and surveillance of the patient and lead to the diagnosis.

Open Journal of Blood Diseases (OJBD) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojbd.2015.51002
Abstract: Primary liver lymphoma is extremely rare, in most of cases it is a B cell lymphoma. Usually the diagnosis is made in middle-aged individuals and most of them have a relatively short life expectancy. In this article, the authors present a case report of a 75-year-old woman with symptoms of three weeks of evolution of diffuse abdominal pain, asthenia and anorexia. The analysis showed cyto cholestasis and the radiological image with lush hepatomegaly because of a large hepatic mass. The patient started chemotherapy and actually is well twenty months after the end of the chemotherapy.

Portuguese Journal of Nephrology & Hypertension , 2012,
Abstract: histoplasmosis is a clinically relevant fungal infection in immunosuppressed patients, in whom it may present as a serious disease. we describe the case of a renal transplant recipient who presented with malaise, dry cough, severe weight loss, abdominal pain and watery diarrhoea. the laboratory workup revealed anaemia and elevated c reactive protein. chest x-ray showed bilateral reticulonodular infiltrates, and computed tomography scan of the chest and abdomen revealed diffuse thickening of the inter- and intralobular septs, suggestive of lymphangitic infiltration. the abdomen had multiple lymphadenopathies along the mesenteric vessels. endoscopic evaluation disclosed disseminated ulcers throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract, and biopsies confirmed the diagnosis of histoplasmosis. despite adequate treatment with liposomal amphotericin b, the patient had a fatal outcome. we describe this case because of the rarity of gastrointestinal presentation in the context of disseminated histoplasmosis, and we also speculate about the transmission through the allograft. it highlights the importance of considering this once geographically limited disease in challenging cases, even in non-endemic areas

Abstract: A Federal University in Northeast of Brazil has been enlarging its activities on the five Campi. On its structure, one group stands out, the families who live around the academic unities of Porangabussu Campus. It aims to apprehend the social representations about the lifestyle of families with approach on their life activities. The case study, which was made with 30 families, happened from September 2006 to March 2007, and were used: semi-strutured interview; participative observation; photography of place's campus, and the working out of a testimony about the choice. It was used the Bardin Contents Analysis (1977) and the Robert Ott approach (1997) for photographs. The representations were organized in five categories, being the main representation, the lack of infra-structure and security on the campus. Based on the Ropper, Logan and Tierney Nursing Model (1990), it was found that all life activities were changed and the most affected were: safe environment, 23.9%; breath, work and distraction, with 13, 3% each, and sleep, 9.6%. About the photography's technique, the Structure of the Campus (33.7%) and the aesthetics (37.6%) were the most represented. The study allowed the knowledge of the reality experienced by families and the need for changes in this place.

Abstract: Abstract The 21st century has witnessed a growth in the importance given to the third mission of Higher Education Institutions (HEI). This third mission refers to the socioeconomic engagement with the surrounding social and business fabric, namely in the form of knowledge transfer (KT) schemes and policies. Despite its widely-recognized importance, the Cultural and Creative Sector (CCS) has remained only marginally engaged with HEI, in part due to the lack of explicit policy by public actors to bring the two types of actors together. This article seeks to explore the institutional frameworks that have been developed for knowledge transfer from HEI to the CCS in selected regions of the Atlantic Area. Towards this goal, it first analyses some of the sectoral specificities of the CCS, identifying three feature which distinguish the sector: the entrepreneurial structure and organization of CCS; the type of knowledge, innovation and motivations of firms; and their absence of connections to HEI. The article seeks then to analyze to what extent existing policy on CCS and KT policies in the regions has tackled these specificities, through a qualitative analysis of reports, policy documents, and academic analysis of the regional economies, before proposing a model for understanding KT policy in the CCS sector, which serves as a preliminary line of inquiry into the knowledge relations in the CCS. Finally, these policy concerns are related to the perceptions of CCS practitioners, attempting to understand the primary concerns of these actors according to their regional context. The article highlights the existing disconnect between public policy, the current state of understanding of the CCS and the industry actors, urging for greater research and policy-development to promote innovation and socioeconomic growth. Abstract: MicroRNAs play an important role in the interplay between bacterial pathogens and host cells, participating as host defense mechanisms, as well as exploited by bacteria to subvert host cellular functions. Here, we show that microRNAs modulate infection by Shigella flexneri, a major causative agent of bacillary dysentery in humans. Specifically, we characterize the dual regulatory role of miR-29b-2-5p during infection, showing that this microRNA strongly favors Shigella infection by promoting both bacterial binding to host cells and intracellular replication. Using a combination of transcriptome analysis and targeted high-content RNAi screening, we identify UNC5C as a direct target of miR-29b-2-5p and show its pivotal role in the modulation of Shigella binding to host cells. MiR-29b-2-5p, through repression of UNC5C, strongly enhances filopodia formation thus increasing Shigella capture and promoting bacterial invasion. The increase of filopodia formation mediated by miR-29b-2-5p is dependent on RhoF and Cdc42 Rho-GTPases. Interestingly, the levels of miR-29b-2-5p, but not of other mature microRNAs from the same precursor, are decreased upon Shigella replication at late times post-infection, through degradation of the mature microRNA by the exonuclease PNPT1. While the relatively high basal levels of miR-29b-2-5p at the start of infection ensure efficient Shigella capture by host cell filopodia, dampening of miR-29b-2-5p levels later during infection may constitute a bacterial strategy to favor a balanced intracellular replication to avoid premature cell death and favor dissemination to neighboring cells, or alternatively, part of the host response to counteract Shigella infection. Overall, these findings reveal a previously unappreciated role of microRNAs, and in particular miR-29b-2-5p, in the interaction of Shigella with host cells

Abstract: a study of acute toxicity was conducted in sprague dawley rats of both sexes by the sole oral administration of the qt2b21 product obtained from the species of nephrolepis cordifolia fern to determine its toxicity. 3 dose levels were evaluated: 33.33, 133.32, and 533.28 mg/kg. some hematologic indexes were determined without finding toxic effects attributable to the administration of the product. the anatomopathological (by macroscopic examination) and histopathological studies of the main organs were conducted. their examination did not show macroscopic alterations. according to the result of the histopathological study, only statistically significant differences were observed in the percentage of relative weight of the testes in the group treated with the intermediate dose as regards the control group. this effect did not depend on the dose. it was concluded that the sole oral administration of the qt2b21 product did not bring about alterations due to toxicity that may be attributed to it. this product was considered as tolerable in sprague dawley rats of both sexes in the dose range from 33.33 to 533.28 mg/kg of weight.
